What Is CMP Tie in Pokémon GO PvP?

CMP stands for Charged Move Priority.

A CMP situation occurs when both players attempt to use a Charged Move on the same turn.

The Pokémon with the higher real Attack stat receives priority and uses its Charged Move first.

What Determines CMP?

CMP is determined by real Attack.

Real Attack depends on:

  • The Pokémon's base Attack
  • Attack IV
  • Level
  • Relevant stat calculation

It is not determined by appraisal percentage or PvP Rank.

Use the PVPium CMP Checker

Use the PVPium CMP Checker to compare the real Attack values of two builds.

CMP Is Not Simply “Higher Attack IV Wins”

Attack IV is only one part of real Attack.

Two different species can have very different base Attack values.

A lower Attack IV Pokémon can still have higher real Attack than another species.

CMP in Mirror Matches

CMP becomes especially noticeable when two players use the same Pokémon.

If one version has higher real Attack, it may receive Charged Move Priority when both throw simultaneously.

Why CMP Matters

Throwing first can allow your Pokémon to:

  • Knock out the opponent before their move
  • Force a shield first
  • Control the endgame
  • Prevent the opponent from using stored energy

CMP and Great League IVs

Many Great League PvP spreads use lower Attack to improve Stat Product.

This means a maximum-bulk Rank 1 spread may lose CMP to a more Attack-weighted version of the same Pokémon.

CMP and Ultra League IVs

The same trade-off appears in Ultra League.

A lower-ranked higher-Attack spread may sacrifice some bulk while gaining mirror CMP.

CMP in Master League

Master League does not reward lowering Attack under a low CP cap.

This makes 15 Attack particularly desirable for many common mirror situations.

CMP vs Stat Product

A higher Stat Product spread can have lower Attack.

A lower Stat Product spread can sometimes gain CMP.

Neither characteristic automatically makes one build universally superior.

CMP vs Breakpoints

Higher Attack can influence both CMP and Fast Move breakpoints.

Read Breakpoints Explained.

CMP vs Bulk

In CP-capped leagues, gaining Attack often means giving up some Defense or HP.

This creates a practical trade-off:

Higher Attack Higher Bulk
May gain CMP May survive longer
May gain breakpoints May gain bulkpoints
Lower Stat Product possible Higher Stat Product possible

Winning CMP Is Not Always Better

There are situations where acting second can be useful.

For example, you may prefer to:

  • Allow the opponent to spend energy first
  • Preserve your Pokémon for farm
  • Create a different final alignment

The battle state matters.

CMP and Stored Energy

A Pokémon returning with stored energy may create an immediate CMP situation.

Remember the opponent's energy when they switch out.

Read Reading Opponent Energy.

CMP and Energy Management

If you know you lose CMP, you may need to throw earlier rather than allowing both Pokémon to reach their attacks on the same turn.

Read Energy Management Explained.

Example: Great League Mirror

Candidate A is extremely bulky with low Attack.

Candidate B has slightly less Stat Product but higher real Attack.

If both reach the same Charged Move simultaneously, Candidate B may gain CMP.

Example: Master League Mirror

Two identical species are at the same level.

One has 15 Attack and the other has 14 Attack.

The 15 Attack version may have the CMP advantage when both throw together.

Do Not Build Only for CMP

CMP is one matchup tool.

Before sacrificing bulk, ask:

  • How common is the mirror?
  • How often do both Pokémon reach the move simultaneously?
  • What other matchups become worse?
  • Does the team actually need the CMP advantage?

CMP Checklist

  • What are the real Attack values?
  • Is this a common mirror?
  • Will both Pokémon reach the move together?
  • What bulk is sacrificed for extra Attack?
  • Does Attack also provide a breakpoint?
  • Does winning CMP change the battle result?

Common CMP Mistakes

Using IV Percentage

CMP uses real Attack.

Assuming Rank 1 Wins CMP

Rank 1 commonly prioritizes Stat Product.

Assuming Higher Attack IV Always Wins Between Different Species

Base stats and level matter.

Chasing CMP in Rare Mirrors

Prioritize relevant situations.

Final Takeaway

CMP decides which Pokémon uses its Charged Move first when both attempt to attack on the same turn.

Real Attack determines the priority.

Use CMP as part of your IV and battle planning, but balance it against bulk, breakpoints, team role, and how often the matchup actually occurs.
