Breakpoints Explained in Pokémon GO PvP

Breakpoints are one of the most important advanced IV concepts in Pokémon GO PvP.

A breakpoint occurs when enough Attack causes a Fast Move to deal one additional point of damage against a specific opponent.

That may sound small, but Fast Moves are used repeatedly throughout a battle. One additional point of damage per Fast Move can accumulate into a meaningful difference.

What Is a Breakpoint?

A breakpoint is an Attack threshold.

Below that threshold, your Fast Move deals one amount of damage.

At or above the threshold, it deals one additional point.

The exact threshold depends on:

  • Your Pokémon
  • Your real Attack stat
  • The Fast Move
  • The opponent
  • The opponent's Defense
  • The Pokémon levels involved

Breakpoints Are Matchup Specific

There is no universal Attack IV that creates every breakpoint.

A spread may reach a breakpoint against one opponent but not another.

This is why saying “higher Attack is better” without specifying the matchup is incomplete.

Why One Damage Can Matter

If a Fast Move is used many times, one additional point on every use can produce:

  • Earlier knockouts
  • Less opponent farm
  • Different Charged Move timing
  • Different shield decisions
  • Different endgame HP

Breakpoint vs PvP Rank

A high PvP Rank usually rewards strong overall Stat Product.

A more Attack-weighted spread may rank lower because it sacrifices some bulk under a CP cap.

However, that additional Attack may reach a useful breakpoint.

This is one reason Rank 1 is not automatically best for every matchup.

Breakpoint vs Stat Product

Stat Product measures the combination of real Attack, Defense, and HP.

A breakpoint focuses on one specific Attack threshold.

Choosing between them is therefore a trade-off between:

  • General bulk and stat efficiency
  • Specific offensive matchup value

Great League Breakpoints

Great League uses a 1500 CP cap.

Many Pokémon prefer lower Attack because it allows more total bulk under the cap.

However, certain higher-Attack spreads can gain important Fast Move breakpoints.

This means the highest Stat Product spread and the most useful matchup spread are not always identical.

Ultra League Breakpoints

Ultra League uses a 2500 CP cap and follows the same general concept.

Because many Ultra League battles are relatively long, repeated Fast Move damage can become significant.

Master League Breakpoints

Master League does not reward intentionally lowering Attack to fit beneath a low CP cap.

Higher Attack is generally desirable, and 15 Attack can be particularly important for both breakpoints and CMP.

Breakpoints and CMP

Attack can affect more than Fast Move damage.

Real Attack also matters when both Pokémon attempt a Charged Move on the same turn.

Use the PVPium CMP Checker when comparing Charged Move Priority.

Breakpoints and Shadow Pokémon

Shadow Pokémon have a different offensive and defensive damage profile.

That means a Shadow and regular version can reach different practical damage outcomes.

Do Not Chase Every Breakpoint

This is the most important practical rule.

A breakpoint is worth caring about when it affects an opponent you realistically expect to face.

Prioritize:

  • Common meta Pokémon
  • Frequent mirrors
  • Major team weaknesses
  • Matchups that actually change the result

A Rare Breakpoint May Not Be Worth the Bulk Loss

If gaining one breakpoint requires sacrificing meaningful Defense and HP across many other matchups, the trade may not be worthwhile.

Example: Rank 1 vs Higher Attack

Candidate A has maximum Stat Product.

Candidate B has slightly lower bulk but higher real Attack.

If Candidate B reaches an important Fast Move breakpoint against a common opponent while preserving acceptable bulk, Candidate B may have practical value despite the lower PvP Rank.

Example: Irrelevant Breakpoint

A higher-Attack spread gains one additional Fast Move damage against an opponent you almost never encounter.

If it loses bulk in several common matchups, the breakpoint may not justify the trade.

How to Evaluate a Breakpoint

  1. Choose the exact league
  2. Choose the exact Pokémon and IV spread
  3. Identify the opponent you care about
  4. Compare real Attack
  5. Check Fast Move damage
  6. Compare the result with a bulkier spread
  7. Determine whether the matchup difference matters to your team

Breakpoint Checklist

  • Which opponent is this breakpoint for?
  • Is that opponent common?
  • How much Attack is required?
  • What bulk do I lose to reach it?
  • Does the breakpoint change the matchup?
  • Does higher Attack also affect CMP?
  • Does my team actually need this interaction?

Common Breakpoint Mistakes

Thinking Every Extra Attack IV Adds Damage

Damage increases at specific thresholds rather than necessarily increasing with every single IV point.

Chasing Rare Matchups

Meta relevance matters.

Ignoring Bulk Loss

More Attack under a CP cap can reduce the Defense and HP available in the finished build.

Assuming Rank 1 Has Every Useful Breakpoint

Rank 1 is generally optimized for Stat Product, not every offensive threshold.

Final Takeaway

A breakpoint is a specific Attack threshold that increases Fast Move damage against a particular opponent.

Breakpoints can matter, but they should not be chased blindly.

Compare the offensive gain with the bulk you sacrifice, prioritize common matchups, and use breakpoints as one part of a complete IV decision rather than the only goal.
