Pokémon GO PvP IV Guide

Learn why a perfect 15/15/15 Pokémon is not always the best choice for PvP leagues with CP limits.

PVPium guide

Many Pokémon GO players assume that a perfect 15/15/15 Pokémon is always the best choice for PvP. However, in Great League and Ultra League this is often not true.

Why is 0/15/15 good?

Attack contributes more to Combat Power (CP) than Defense and HP. Because Great League and Ultra League have CP limits, Pokémon with lower Attack IVs can reach a higher level before hitting the CP cap.

This usually results in higher total stats and better performance in PvP battles.

Simple rule: for CP-capped leagues, low Attack and high Defense/HP often creates a better PvP stat product.

Example

A 0/15/15 Azumarill can often perform better in Great League than a 15/15/15 Azumarill because it reaches a higher level while remaining under 1500 CP.

How PvP rankings work

PvP rankings compare possible IV combinations and calculate the resulting stats under league CP limits. Rank #1 means the IV combination provides the highest stat product available for that Pokémon in that league.

Should you always keep rank #1?

Not necessarily. Some attack-weighted IV spreads may perform better in specific matchups or win CMP ties. However, for most players, high-ranked PvP IVs are a great starting point.
